A Study Of Cultural Filtering In The English Version Of Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian

With the prevalence of “Cultural Turn” in translation theory,culture and translator's subjectivity have attracted increasing attention in translation studies.Translation is not only the transformation between two languages,but also a cross-cultural activity in which target culture will impose filtration on source culture according to its cultural traditions,values,beliefs and customs,leading to inevitable changes in forms and contents as well,as done through cultural filtering,where the source text has to go through preliminary filtering by a filtering membrane including translator,patronage and readers initially,which determines whether the source text can enter the target culture.Then filtering apertures,comprised by norms,values,language and symbols serve as checks to either allow specific elements to go through smoothly,or accept with altering,or reject totally,deciding how the source text is presented to readers.Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian,the novel by Liu Zhenyun,is marked by traditional expressions of storytelling,the tone of folk communication,and folk discourse with cultural characteristics,offering adequate material for the study of cultural filtering.The thesis intends to explore the manifestations of cultural filtering in its English version I Did Not Kill My Husband by Goldblatt.It is revealed that only by going through the filtering of filtering membrane and apertures,can the source text enter the target culture.In translation,it is cultural filtering's aim to eliminate differences to make the text understood and meanwhile,present disparities to make translation necessary.Goldblatt mainly employs partial filtering and zero filtering,achieving the balance between the source text and target readers properly and embracing considerable readership.Therefore,appropriate cultural filtering can benefit the spread of culture,playing an indispensable part in translation.
