In recent years,TV adaptation raises the upsurge of “Sherlock Holmes”,and the detective fans' enthusiasm remains unabated. For most of the adaptations, the focus is on tribute to the classic scenes or add new character relationships, lacking creative elements. However,Elementary changes the original plots and character settings and creates vivid character images with a new modern city and highly characteristic character dialogues.Characterization is indispensable to language,so this research explores the method of characterizing and the relationship among characters in this drama from the perspective of language. This research focuses on the analysis of the classical roles: Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson. The author of this research chooses the subtitles from Elementary as the research data.Firstly, the author uses Conversational Implicature to study on the characters' personalities and psychology. At the same time, with the help of pragmatic deduction mechanism proposed by Xu Shenghuan, the analysis process is comparatively objective.Secondly, combined with the concept of Rapport Management Theory in interpersonal communication, the purpose of the behavior behind the language of the two main characters is explained. Finally, the thesis explores whether there is a corresponding relationship between Conversational Implicature and Rapport Management Theory in the characterization of this play,so as to get the method of characterizing. The research finds out that Sherlock's personality is characterized by conceit, humor, and poor expression, while Watson's personality is characterized by carefulness, ambition and seeking freedom. The two characters support and complement each other in the play.At the same time, the violation of the Cooperative Principle in Conversational Implicature corresponds to the components of Rapport Management Theory, which plays an important role in characterization. This study will has practical guiding significance to the combination of Conversational Implicature and Rapport Management Theory,as well as to the study of characterization and the method of characterizing in TV plays.
