Reading teaching is the main component of English teaching in senior school.Cultivating students' reading ability plays an important role in the development of students' language ability and the formation of the key competencies of English subject.Research shows that the traditional reading teaching mainly focuses on explaining vocabulary,grammar and sentence patterns in the text,supplemented by corresponding reading skills and methods,but neglects the shaping of students' thinking quality and the cultivation of students' learning ability,cultural consciousness and other qualities.Although there are many literature researches on the theory of key competencies in English subject,there are few researches on how to apply key competencies in practical teaching.Theoretical research is important,but practical exploration should not be ignored.How to implement the key competencies of English in the teaching of English reading,effectively carry out the teaching of the subject curriculum,and cultivate the all-round development of the people is the top priority,is the top priority of the curriculum reform.That is,how the teaching situation is,how the discipline core accomplishment is promoted,what problems still exist in the reality,how to improve the problems,etc.,we need to take the initiative to find and respond to.Based on such thinking,this study attempts to investigate the current situation of English reading teaching in senior schools by taking the key competencies of English as the benchmark.Based on the key competencies theory of English subject,this study investigated the current situation of English reading teaching for a semester by taking four classes of students and four English teachers in grade one of senior school in G City as experimental subjects.The experiment mainly adopts a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research methods.Interviews and questionnaires collected and collated data.From the four dimensions of teaching methods,teaching process,teaching evaluation and student experience,the author conducted an in-depth investigation on the current situation of high school English reading teaching.It is found that there are some problems and deficiencies in English teachers' understanding of the key competencies of English subjects,the design of reading teaching and the application of methods.Through the analysis and discussion of the causes of the problems,the author puts forward the development of teachers' key competencies,and it also suggests that teachers' competencies should be used to guide and promote the effectiveimplementation of the key competencies of English subject.
