According to English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2018),English Subject Core Competencies is composed of four dimensions,linguistic competence,cultural disposition,thinking quality and learning ability.Under the new requirements of English subject goals,English reading will play a crucial role in improving Core Competencies of middle school students,especially in four parts of English Subject Core Competencies.Therefore,this thesis intends to explore English reading instructional design of middle school based on English Subject Core Competencies,aiming to deepen middle school teachers' cognition about English Subject Core Competencies,and improve English reading teaching effects in the middle school.In this thesis,research participants are all English teachers in Guiyang No.17 Middle School and students of two classes in Grade 9.One of the two classes is the experimental class(EC),the other is the controlled class(CC).Before the experiment begins,the author learns about teachers' cognition of English Subject Core Competencies and students' evaluation of English reading class through questionnaire survey.Meanwhile,pre-test shows that these two classes have approximate English reading level.In the process of the experiment,the students in the EC are taught by the teaching mode which applied in English reading instructional design based on English Subject Core Competencies,while students in the CC are taught by the lecture method.At the end of the experiment,the author learns about students in the EC whose opinions are towards English reading teaching and whose English reading level is promoted or not through interviews.According to the results of questionnaire,the author finds that the majority of middle school English teachers do not have full understanding of English Subject Core Competencies and do not realize the correlationbetween English Subject Core Competencies and English instructional design.Based on the results of interview,students' reading skills and reading interests have been enhanced.And then,the comparison of results from the post-test between the EC and the CC shows that the average achievements of English reading in the EC are a little higher than those in the CC.Through this research,the author finds that most middle school teachers need gradually realize the correlation of English Subject Core Competencies and English reading instructional design.Under the guidance of English Subject Core Competencies,English reading instructional design in the EC can not only improve English reading teaching effects,but also can enhance students' reading interests and reading skills.
