In the late Qing Dynasty,Tolstoy's revolutionary spirit and concern for Asia first attracted intellectuals seeking change.Later, the social atmosphere filled with moral sentiments and idealistic practices during the May Fourth period made Tolstoy recognized by intellectuals including anarchists.Anarchists because of the inherent requirements of morality and the external needs of labor in the May Fourth period reflect the very close relationship between Tolstoy's thoughts, but moral self-deprecation and labor doctrine are only a small part of Tolstoy's thoughts, and for the core ideas of Tolstoy's later years, that is,the non-resistance anarchism or the Christian anarchist thought, the anarchists have drawn a clear relationship with Tolstoy's thoughts around the May Fourth Movement. However, the fundamental separation between the anarchists and Tolstoy's thoughts is manifested when anarchists was attacked by Marxism-Leninism.In the new dynamic of anarchism in the late 1920 s,although there was a critical science among anarchists and a reflection on the consciousness of modernity, this consciousness has always been unable to compete with the new trend of anarchists using science to reconstruct their own ideological system at this time.Ultimately, this new trend has left anarchists into a paradox.
