Impacts Of Collective Conscience On The Formation And Protection Of Placeness In Zhang Guying Village

It is believed that culture and spirit is the core of the placeness of traditional villages.In China,the traditional culture with "home" has important value in the placeness of traditional villages where people live together.In the context of tourism development,the impact of tourists and foreign cultures is likely to have a complex impact on the culture and spirit of traditional villages,while the inheritance of culture and placeness may be relevant with collective consciousness and the resulting cultural identity.Therefore,this study intends to conduct the field investigation in Zhang Guying village,and discuss the possible influence of collective consciousness in traditional Chinese culture on the formation and continuation of traditional villages' placeness.In order to enrich the related research in the construction of placeness in traditional villages,and better serve the protection and inheritance of placeness.The thesis is divided into seven chapters.The first chapter introduces the background,significances,contents,methods,technical route and possible innovation of the research.Chapter Two involves literature review and the definition of the main concepts.The third chapter focuses on the empirical research,including case introduction,research methods and sample description.The fourth chapter is about data processing and model developing,which uses the software Nvivo 8 to carry out open coding,axial coding and selective coding,and then constructs the theoretical model in order to explain “the influence of collective consciousness on the formation of placeness in traditional villages.” In chapter five,based on the established theoretical model and field investigations,it demonstrates the possible influence of collective consciousness on the formation of placeness in Zhang Guying village.Chapter Six discusses the possible influence of culture on placeness in Zhang Guying village under the tourism development.Chapter Seven is conclusion and discussion.Based on the grounded theory and the data coding,it develops 547 initial concepts(Feng Shui,central axis,etc.),six sub-categories(material characteristics,family rules and family traditions,etc.),as well as three main categories(technological subsystem,sociological subsystem and ideological subsystem).Besides,it finds that the core concept “placeness formation” can explain all the categories.Finally,it develops a three-dimensional theoretical model.After verifying the feasibility of the theoretical model,the study analyzes the influence of collective consciousness on the formation of placeness in Zhang Guying village,and finds that:(1)the collective consciousness,based on the farming economy and rooted in the traditional village,is a kind of social psychological cognition and emotional attitude recognized by the villagers in the village,which has an important influence on the formation of placeness,mainly displays in three dimensions(technological subsystem,sociological subsystem and ideological subsystem);(2)technological subsystem includes material characteristics and traditions;(3)sociological subsystem contains rules and regulations;(4)ideological subsystem covers cultural atmosphere and values.In zhangguying village,the family consciousness with the blood relationship as the core is an important part of the village collective consciousness,which develops the "Dragon settlements" and the connected residential buildings;16 family maxims and 5 family precepts,as well as the "filial piety" and "respecting teachers and valuing education".Even in the context of tourism development,villagers still adhere to the "unity without separation" in the form of big houses,and follow the family instructions and precepts,forming a positive local identity,which further promotes the placeness protection of villages.In conclusion,discussing the relationship between collective consciousness and placeness is not only beneficial to the study of characteristics of traditional villages,but also to the protection of traditional villages.That is,the collective consciousness guarantees the sustainable development of the village's social ecosystem,vice versa,the local culture as well as the Chinese traditional culture can be inherited in the process of village protection.
