The Intertextual Travel Of Lu Xun's "National Character"

It is generally acknowledged that Lu Xun is a litterateur and thinker;he is the founder of discussing national characters in the history of modern Chinese literature.His “national character” is disseminated to the West with the emergence of English versions of his fictions.Under the guidance of the Intertextuality Theory and Traveling Theory,this thesis elucidated the phenomenon of the intertextual travel of Lu Xun?s “national character” and explained definitions of “intertextual travel” and Lu Xun?s “national character”.Based on intertextual analysis and closing reading,this study found a book which was written by a westerner was a major western source of Lu Xun?s “national character”.When this thought was disseminated to the West,it produced negative influence.The thesis was structured as follows:The first part dealt with the beginning of “intertextual travel”,including the definition and the western source of “national character”.Lu Xun?s “national character” focused on criticizing the incorrigibility of Chinese characters by means of writing and Arthur Smith?s Chinese Characteristics was its major western source.Next part was the second stage of this travel.A detailed analysis was made between Lu Xun?s fictions and English translated texts in order to see the conveyance of his “national character”.Selected three versions,presented how the meaning and theme of original texts were reproduced in translated texts from lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level.In the last part,the ending and influence of intertextual travel were talked about.The spreading of Lu Xun?s “national character” produced some negative influence.Thus,this is the whole process of the intertextual travel of Lu Xun?s “national character”.After clearing the intertextual travel of Lu Xun?s “national character”,the thesis has certain signification to literature study and enriches the content in this field.
