As an essential carrier of academic research results, academic articles are vital to academic exchanges.A comprehensive understanding of the academic journals around the world is of significant importance to the development of science and technology in China, while the translation of academic articles is irreplaceable in this process.Since academic articles are featured by normativity, accuracy, logicality and objectivity, translators have to face lexical and syntactic problems when translating them. The source text of the translation practice in this study,Teacher-child conversations in preschool classrooms: Contributions to children's vocabulary development,is a typical academic article.Considering its characteristics, the author has translated the source text under the instruction of translation shifts theory advanced by an influential linguist J.C.Catford.Starting from the research on translation shifts theory, this study employs the case study method to prove the effectiveness of translation shifts theory on guiding the English-Chinese translation of academic articles from the views of level shifts and category shifts. At the same time, the author has taken the textuality of the text into consideration, and analyzed the application of translation shifts theory from the view of discourse shifts. The results of this study may provide a relatively new perspective to English-Chinese academic article translation, and may also provide a reference for translators in translating English academic articles.
