Owing to exile or self-exile,the diasporic writers immigrated to Western world to pursue their writing careers in colonial and post-colonial period.Salman Rushdie,V.S.Naipaul,together with Kazuo Ishguro are regarded as the three most influential migrant writers in Britain. Both Rushdie and Naipaul are British writers in literary circle in recent years. The experiences of being born in the Third World but living in the West provide materials for their later literary writings. The obsession with homeland's memory becomes the characteristic of their diasporic writings and shows nostalgia towards their motherlands.Against the post-colonial context of globalization and the post-colonialism,this thesis will analyze the images of India as depicted by Rushdie and Naipaul. It consists of five parts. The first part mainly introduces the two diasporas and their works,as well as the researches on the images of India in the works of them both at home and abroad. The second part briefly explains the concepts and contents of post-colonialism and diasporic writing, which paves a way for the following analysis. The third part explores the similar images of India in Rushdie's and Naipaul's writings from three aspects: the sufferings of female reflect hierarchical India;the lost cultural identities of survivors indicate marginal India;the mixture of heterogeneous culture embodies hybrid India. The fourth part discusses different images of India from their depictions of history and reality. The fifth part summarizes the whole paper.Although Rushdie and Naipaul are both Indian diasporic writers, their writings on the images of India share similarities as well as differences, reflecting their complex feelings towards the homeland. The thesis studies Indian images in their works, which aims to uncover the mysterious veil of India and approach the oriental country. What's more,it can provide good insight into an understanding of national complex feelings of diasporas. With globalization and the rapid development of the Third World, the oriental countries have gradually attracted the attentions from the world, and meanwhile, the literary circle has begun to pay more attention to the oriental literature.Through the analysis, this paper can also stimulate readers' interests in other oriental writers.
