In ancient China,the evolution of the family exerted profound influence on various facets of Chinese society,particularly in the period of Wei Jin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties(220AD--589AD).During this period,there occurred the politics of powerful families,among which was the Xiahou family,a typical one of them.The Xiahou family originated from Xiahou ying,Xiahou sheng and Xiahou jian in Han dynasty(202AD--220AD).At the end of Han Dynasty,following the Cao family,Xiahou dun and Xiahou yuan became new politicians due to the military achievements,and thus laid the foundation of rising of the Xiahou family.Then some members of the family,Xiahou hui,Xiahou xuan,Xiahou zhan,Xiahou chun,etc,diverted their interests to literature and cultural matters from military exploits,therefore making the Xiahou family a real aristocratic family.After the transformation,the Xiahou family obtained relatively impressive achievements in literature.The works of family members,including fu,argumentative writing,literary eulogy,inscription,biography,all enjoyed a great reputation,especially the fu of Xiahou Zhan,and the argumentative writing of Xiahou Xuan.In the history of Xiaohou family,Xiahou hui and Xiahou xuan took a lead in family literary creation,then Xiahou zhan and Xiahou chun brought that to a climax.As a matter of fact,the family literature of Xiahou also carried some features of literature in Wei-Jin period to some extent.In addition,the culture of the Xiahou family contained strong atmosphere of metaphysics.Historically,in Wei-Jin Dynasty,new schools of thought mushroomed,and as a result,metaphysics instead of Confucianism became the mainstream ideology.Under such historical surroundings,the Xiahou family was inevitably influenced by Metaphysics.Xiahou xuan became the leader of Metaphysics.Moreover,members of Xiahou family,such as Xiahou hui,Xiahou zhan,Xiahou chun nearly all had Metaphysics involved in their literary works.Nevertheless,Confucianism also had some bearing on culture of the Xiahou family.Hence,the cultural tradition of Xiahou family embodied,on the one hand,pragmatic pursuit of great deed and,on the other hand,refreshing and ingenious style.The formation and development of Xiahou family culture had a lot to do with unconscious influence by Xiahou ying,Xiahou sheng and Xiahou jian.Besides,they was closely related to the special geographical position of Bozhou which was characterized by cultural integration and compatibility.In addition,the implement of Nine-rank system,the free academic thoughts,as well as inclusive and equitable atmosphere of Cao family in Weijin period all plays an essential role in the development of the Xiahou family culture.
