The Love And Marriage Narrative Of Pai Hsien-yung's Short Stories

In the 1950 s and 1960 s,Pai Hsien-yung's short stories were attracted the attention and high praise of the Hong Kong,Taiwan and overseas Chinese literary circles after published.He were judged as a brilliant and accomplished short story writer and a prodigy of contemporary Chinese short stories.From the narrative focus,space and time,this paper analyzed the love narrative of Pai Hsien-yung's short stories by using Tan Junqiang,Shen Dan and Gerald Genette's western narrative theory particularly.Firstly,when Pai Hsien-yung narrated the love story,he was good at using different narrative focus to show it.His early short stories focused on inner narrative.He often take the continual view of a character by first person or third person.But his later work more stressed on the outer narrative,the narrator narrated the love story of the characters in the story without any intervene.The mature period of the works had a variety of narrative focus.The omniscient point of view told us some unknown stories from the perspective of god and made necessary additions.And the fixed inner narrative described the characters' love stories by providing memories of special events.Secondly,his short stories had a particularly large span in the narrative space.The traditional love story in Guilin area and the love story of ladies in the republic of China,the bleak love in Taipei,and even the love story about gays in the Taipei's new park.The style of love stories was very different in each story space.The style of love stories was very different in every spacial narrative.Thirdly,Pai Hsien-yung payed great attention to narrative time who had a strong sense of time.Time often plays an important role in the character's experience,the transformation of the characters and the elucidation of the theme.Therefore,a variety of techniques were interspersed with the short stories in the narrative time,which pointed out the fate of men and women who loved each other.The delay,the omits,the repetition and the reminiscent narrative,which showed the love story from the multiple perspectives by controlling the rhythm of narrative time.
