In recent years,as one of the most representative cultural elements of Sichuan,Sichuan Opera has been popular at home and abroad.Meanwhile, with a growing number of overseas Sichuan Opera lovers come to Sichuan to study Sichuan Opera, the materials about Sichuan Opera should also be translated for publicity. This report discusses some parts of C-E translation of The Pandas’ Lecture on Sichuan Opera Culture entrusted by Chengdu Telecast Culture & Culture Communication Co.,Ltd.in 2016.Considering that the text aims at promoting communication and publicity of Chinese traditional culture,so the translator chooses “optimal relevance” of relevance-theoretic translation theory as the guide of this translation practice.Relevance-theoretic translation theory considers translation as the dual ostensive-inferential process. In this process, the translator should first understand the intention of the author, and then make this intention explicit in translation to spare readers gratuitous cognitive efforts and to achieve similar contextual effects. Therefore,in the process of translation, the translator analyzes the author’s intention and the readers’ cognitive context, and focuses on the following three aspects of translation of cultural texts: Firstly, the translator should know how to analyze the original text guided by "optimal relevance",and which methods should be applied to deal with cultural default at lexical level, such as the term translation and the dialect translation.Secondly, faced with Chinese four-character idioms, long and complicated sentences, and parallelism, the translator should consider readers’ background and employ appropriate methods to deal with cultural default at syntactic and rhetorical level.Thirdly, after translation, the translator should know how to deal with improper text arrangement by communicating with clients.Through analyzing the translation process and cases, and referring to the translation methods of various types of public documents, the translator learns to analyze the purpose and contextual effect of the text according to the features of the text, discusses cultural default in translation at lexical, syntactic and rhetorical levels, and considers translation methods guided by “optimal relevance” such as transliteration and paraphrase,back-translation,annotation,amplification,rewriting and comprehensive method. Moreover, the translator’s subjectivity in proofreading suggests the translator should learn how to make flexible adjustments to the translation, how to communicate with customers, and how to comply with the translator’s professional ethics. The translator hopes to provide the methods as some references for cultural translation for international public relations.
