| As the frontier of reform and opening up,Guangdong has made great efforts to develop itself over the past three decades,and hence has formed a unique cultural system,bringing new vigor and vitality into C hinese culture.However,little research has been done on Guangdong‘s culture and its translation at home and abroad.What is worse,there exist such problems that the translator not only fails to thoroughly understand the meaning of culture-specific words and cannot translate the sentences in a proper way(???2014),but also mistranslates the text due to language errors and the ignorance of cultural connotation(???2011),and there is also a lack of functional equivalence theory-based study on Guangdong‘s culture and geography.Given the problems above,the author translates and studies the festival customs,dietetic customs and Guangfu custom culture and ethnic groups in C hapter six of Cultural Geography of Guangdong written by Situ Shangji under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.In order to explore the precise expression of cultural-gapped words and the appropriate translation of long and difficult sentences,the report translates and analyzes the cases with the methods of literal translation,free translation,transliteration,transliteration plus annotation,literal translation plus annotation and free translation plus annotation at the lexical level,with the methods of conversion,addition and passive voice at the syntactic level and with the methods of addition and combination at the discourse level.In the light of the assessments from the supervisor and a native speaker of English,the report findings are that N ida‘s reader-oriented functional equivalence theory is suitable for translating Guangdong‘s unique and specific culture.When translating these culturespecific words,the translator should express the meaning as much as possible.The significance of this study lies in promoting the transmission of Guangdong‘s culture and the cross-cultural communication. |
