The translation of sinology is a crucial part that cannot be ignored in the cultural exchanges between China and the West.The dissertation analyzes some examples from The Sky of Sinology under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory.Functional equivalence theory emphasizes that translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message,first in terms of meaning,then in terms of style.Based on functional equivalence theory,the dissertation makes a detailed analysis of The Sky of Sinology from the perspective of meaning,stylistic and cultural equivalence.Some translation methods and skills are studied in the dissertation.First of all,meaning equivalence is the first task for the translator.In order to achieve meaning equivalence,the translator makes a distinction and selection among words or sentences.Secondly,on stylistic equivalence,the translator analyzes the characteristics of The Sky of Sinology,and tries to make a reproduction of the original style of the colloquial expressions,the quoted Dao De Jing and Analects of Confucius.With the clear and concise colloquial expressions,the translator adopts skillfully literal translation,free translation,addition and other translation methods;in order to achieve stylistic equivalence,the colloquial English can be applied to the English translation of the colloquial expressions of The Sky of Sinology,and the rhetorical questions are remained in the target text.Owning to the characteristics of classical Chinese in the quoted Dao De Jing and Analects,when translating,some explanatory information is added.In the meantime,Dao De Jing and Analects are often in antithesis,the sentence pattern of the translated text should be consistent with the original one.Thirdly,on cultural equivalence,the translator applies domestication or foreignization to deal with language and culture difference,making foreign target readers understand and accept the translated text.In conclusion,functional equivalence theory provides theoretical guidance in dealing with meaning,stylistic and cultural equivalence in translating The Sky of Sinology.Meanwhile,the summarized translation principles and skills can be a reference for the similar translation texts.
