English writing is not only one of the important criteria for measuring the comprehensive ability of learners to apply English,but also the test content of various tests such as CET-4,CET-6,National Graduate Entrance Examination,IELTS,TOEFL,BFT and PETS.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the application of different genres in English writing teaching,which improves students' English writing ability.Genre-based teaching approach pays attention to genre structures of the text and the application of genre knowledge in class.It aims at assisting students in acquiring genre knowledge and guiding students to get information gradually based on genre structures and language features,enhancing students' writing ability.The paper concerns mainly about the application of genre-based teaching approach in College English writing teaching on the basis of genre theory,systemic functional linguistics and Vygotsky's learning theory.This thesis tried to answer the following two questions:(1)Can the application of Genre-based teaching approach improve College English students' writing proficiency?(2)Can the application of Genre-based teaching approach has an impact on students' writing motivation? In this thesis,two classes were chosen by the researcher,which includes 80 sophomore students from the university in LanZhou as participants and chose questionnaire surveys,interview and writing tests as experimental instruments.The researcher designed the teaching model of applying genre-based teaching approach and trained students for one semester.It referred two genres,which include exposition and argumentation.The researcher did the writing tests before and after experiment in EC and CC.At the same time,the researcher made questionnaires and interviews in EC.After the experiment,the researcher used SPSS 21.0 to analyze all collected data from questionnaires and writing comprehension tests by independent samples T-test,paired samples T-test and other descriptive statistics.The results of the experiment show that,on one hand,the application of genre-based teaching approach can improve students' writing achievements effectively.On the other hand,the application of genre-based teaching approach has impact on students' writing motivation,it can enhance students' writing self-confidence and writing sense of accomplishment,which indicates the application of genre-based teaching approach is practical and effective.On the basis of above findings,some pedagogical implications for English writing are drawn.It can make students know the writing patterns and structures of different genres.What's more,students areable to choose appropriate contents,expressions as well as rhetoric according to the genre of composition.
