English writing reflects students' ability to apply English language comprehensively and it is an important measurement of students' writing performance.However,it has not been given enough attention in high school English teaching.From the study of literature in recent years,it is found that unclear topic,unreasonable layout and a large number of Chinese English are common problems in many high school students' English compositions.Besides,it is found that most students hold passive attitude towards English writing.Product,process and genre approach are commonly used approaches in high school English writing teaching.Product approach highly emphasizes the input of language knowledge and pays much attention to the practice of sentence patterns.Although it is conducive to the improvement of students' writing performance in the short term,it ignores the cultivation of students' writing skills.Process approach focuses on the development of students' writing skills,but it can't provide sufficient language knowledge for students.Genre approach makes students realize that writing is not only the activity of language knowledge construction,but also the activity of social meaning construction.However,what should be noticed is that genre approach also fails to cultivate students' writing skills.Process genre approach,which combines the advantages of product,process and genre approach is finally put forward by Badger and White.It emphasizes social context in which writing takes place,pays attention to the cultivation of students' writing skills,and attaches importance to the language knowledge input and textual pattern.Its advantages make it more and more popular in high school English writing teaching.The superiority of process genre approach will be further examined in this paper.The following two research questions are put forward.(1)Can the application of process genre approach help the senior high school students improve their writing performance?(2)What influence can process genre approach exert on students' attitude towards English writing?The research subjects of this experiment are Senior One students who come from two parallel classes of No.2 Middle School in Qin'an.One of them is defined as Control Class and the other is Experimental Class.Product approach is implemented in Control Class while process genre approach is applied in Experimental Class.The experiment lasts two months,during which exposition,argumentation,narration and applied writing are respectively used as teaching content.During the experiment,the author uses test toknow students' writing performance.Besides,the author uses questionnaire to investigate students' attitude towards English writing.The collected statistics are analyzed by the software SPSS after the experiment to examine the effectiveness of process genre approach.The author analyzes the statistics of pre-test and post-test.The results show that process genre approach can effectively help students improve their writing performance while product approach fails to do it.At the same time,the author compares the statistics of pre-questionnaires and post-questionnaires.The results show that process genre approach can help students become positive and active towards English writing.Finally,by reflecting the experimental process,the author summarizes the shortcomings during the application of process genre approach in English writing teaching,thus giving some implications for future study.
