Since it emerged in the 1990 s,the concept of Immersive Theatre has quickly spread in the theatre world with its avant-garde feature. As one of the originators, the British theatre company Punchdrunk produced Sleep No More in 2003,which has been performed in London for the first time and then went to New York from 2011 till now.It has been introduced to Shanghai in 2016 so that Chinese spectators2 had the opportunities to know about and experience this new theatre form.As “immersive” has become phenomenally popular,it tends to be misunderstood. This dissertation starts with the basic situation and background of Immersive Theatre which is defined as emphasizing the participation of the spectators, featuring fuzzy boundaries and open texts, and using technology to create an atmosphere that stimulates the theatrical phenomenon of the sensory experience. It also focuses on the theatricality and dramaticality of Immersive Theatre, and takes Sleep No More as an example to find that text still plays an important role in the performance. Finally, according to the development of domestic and foreign Immersive Theatre, the practical significance has also been discussed.
