On The Reconstruction Of Female Image In Translation From The Perspective Of Imagology

As the core of literary works,image is typical,literary and social,through the construction of which,an author can express his or her thoughts and embody the social value of literary works.In translation,the translator,replacing the original author,becomes a new image creator.In the process of image translation,the translator will be affected by various ethnic,cultural and social factors,resulting in image reconstruction.The theory of imagology in comparative literature provides a new perspective for the study of image reconstruction in translation.This paper attempts to explore the reconstruction of the female image in the English translation of Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian from the perspective of imagology.After careful comparison of the source text and the target text,the author finds that the image of protagonist Li Xuelian has been reconstructed in the English version of Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian.Therefore,based on the methodology of imagology,this thesis focuses first on intrinsic analysis of specific examples taken from the text to summarize the reconstructed Li Xuelian's image and then on detailed extrinsic analysis of three aspects,including the reconstructed image and the reality,the western social imagination,and the translator as the image re-constructor,to explore what pushes the translator to make such choice in Li Xuelian's image reconstruction.Through comparative analysis and research,this thesis finds that Goldblatt portrays an independent woman who is inferior in terms of status and power and suffers terribly under the oppression of men and society.Social collective imagination of the west and Goldblatt's personal feelings and attitudes towards exotic countries play essential roles in the process of image translation and reconstruction.In the meanwhile,Goldblatt's concern and consideration on the social value of literary works also exert a huge impact on the image reconstruction in translation.This thesis not only delves into and presents the deep reasons for Li Xuelian's image reconstruction in translation from the perspective of imagology,but also offers another perspective for the study of the translation of Wo Bu Shi Pan Jianlian.In the meanwhile,the current research brings some thoughts in analyzing image reconstruction in translation and hopes to help the later translation studies related to image reconstruction.
