The Application Value Of Stamp Of Sealing Clay In The Creation Of Seal Carved In Relief

The discovery of sealing clay was one of the important achievements of epigraphy.With a large number of regional archaeological excavations and bibliographical description,sealing clay gradually attracted the attention of seal scholars.For a long time,“the application of seals in the Qin and Han Dynasties” has been regarded as the standard of advocating ancient artistic conception in the seal circle,while seal carved in relief didn't exist as the main form during the Western Han and Eastern Han Dynasties.In the Song and Yuan Dynasties,the seal characters of seal carved in relief were tortuous without rules,and the ancient technique was gradually abolished.The phenomenon that“it is difficult for characters on a seal carved in relief to have any more ancient meaning”is a constant puzzle.The sealing clay,as the style of characters cut in relief on ancient imperial seals,has made up for the regret that there was few characters on a seal carved in relief in Qin and Han Dynasty,and also met people's increasingly extensive exploration of “enriching the art of seal cutting beyond seal”,which is of great significance in the application of seal cutting.It has important enlightenment to the creation and change of seal cutting style of Wu Changshuo,Zhao Guni and others.However,the relevant records of “application of sealing clay in seal” in past dynasties have not been systematically recorded.The informition of it only stays at a single and intuitive level,and has not reached a certain degree of depth.Therefore,for the art of seal cutting,the subject of “application of sealing clay in seal” is of great significance for further exploration.By taking the application of sealing clay based on the creative practice of seal carved in relief as the entry point,this paper makes a general analysis from three aspects.First,the sorting of the existing data of the features of the sealing clay;second,the analysis and summary the direct or indirect application cases of literati seal cutting after the sealing clay was unearthed;third,break the prejudice of only taking the thick edge and effect of broken characters from sealing clay,to analyze the various meanings of characters on a seal carved in relief,in creation and application,and to explore the infinite possibility on a seal carved in relief innovation.
