Self-repair is a very common linguistic phenomenon. The demanding and complex tasks in Simultaneous interpreting(SI)make self-repair an avoidable occurrence.Researchers'opinions have been divided when it comes to directionality in interpreting. As till today,no consensus has been reached on whether interpreting from the interpreter's second language(B language)into his/her mother tongue(A language)would work out better or the other way around. Some achievement has been made in the field of self-repair and directionality respectively, though only a few have devoted to systematic elaboration on the link between these two. Therefore, this thesis aims to focus on this aspect. This thesis attempts to conduct a study on how directionality affects the frequency of and motivations behind self-repair in SI.This thesis aims to examine the link between directionality and distribution of self-repairs in SI,explore the motivations behind self-repair in different direction of SI and provide suggestions for future interpreter training and practice. This thesis takes Petite's self-repair taxonomy as the theoretical guidance, and tentatively proposes a refined classification of self-repair that is suitable for Chinese-English(C-E)and English-Chinese(E-C)SI.The current study adopts the experiment of C-E and E-C SI and a retrospective interview.Findings of the experiment are summarized as follows:(1)In C-E SI,the majority of self-repairs are error repairs;(2)in E-C SI,interpreter trainees attach most importance to appropriateness repairs;(3)in C-E SI,the motivation behind repair is to help the audience better perceive the output;(4)in E-C SI,the motivation is to ensure greater approximation to the original output.
