Interpreting is an immediate activity. In this process, interpreters monitor their language output and may sometimes adopt self-repairs as their strategies.Studying self-repairs provides reference for interpreting learning and teaching. This thesis studies self-repair phenomenon of student interpreters in Chinese-English(C-E)and English-Chinese(E-C)interpreting through an experiment. The participants of this experiment are 30 MTI students from Beijing Foreign Studies University majoring in interpreting. In this experiment,30 students participate in C-E interpreting and then E-C interpreting practice. Then, data is collected, transcribed, and labeled.Next, this study interviews with 5 audience to ask them questions about the influence of self-repairs.This study explores the following questions:1)What types of self-repairs can be observed in both C-E and E-C interpreting by student interpreters?2)What distribution patterns of self-repairs can be observed?Does directionality influence self-repairs made by student interpreters?3)Does self-repair influence audience's understanding and listening experience?Findings in this study are stated as follows:1)Student interpreters make three types of repairs in C-E and E-C interpreting:different information repairs, appropriateness repairs and error repairs;2)Student interpreters make more different information repairs and appropriateness repairs in E-C interpreting.Student interpreters make more error repairs in C-E interpreting.Through inputting the number of self-repairs in two directions into SPSS for paired sample test,it is found there is significant difference in self-repairs between E-C and C-E interpreting, which means directionality influences on self-repairs;and 3)Self-repairs don't influence understanding of audience, but number error repairs, multiple repairs and filled pauses influence listening experience. This study suggests that student interpreters improve their basic skills in Chinese and English. They should improve their accuracy in English grammar and vocabulary.Besides, student interpreters should also practice more in number interpreting to avoid the influence of number errors and repairs. From the perspective of influence of self-repairs on audience, this study is of great significance to public speaking.Speakers could control their filled pauses and multiple times of repairs to improve their public speaking skills.
