As one of the four language skills,speaking plays a very important role in English study in high schools.However,it is difficult and time consuming to help students improve their speaking ability,so it is necessary to explore an effective method to improve students' oral English.At present,oral English teaching in Chinese high school has not always been effective.The students are incapable of communicating with people fluently in real-life communication.In order to improve the situation,Production-oriented Approach(POA)was applied into use in this thesis.POA was proposed by Wen Qiufang,which has a good effect on teaching English in college..In order to explore better effect of teaching English,the present study intends to conduct an experimental one applying POA in high school English speaking class,whose results will be analyzed by statistical instruments to evidence the effect of applying POA into high school oral English teaching.The instructional designs are based on the basic principles of POA,which arrange teaching procedures according to the objectives of the output.The procedures are divided into three parts: motivating,enabling and assessing.In motivating part,teacher raises communicative challenges,asks the students to try producing output,and then explains the objectives of finishing the tasks.And in enabling part,teacher invites students to set evaluation standards,then divides the final output dialogues into several mini-dialogues before providing selective materials.At last,in assessing part,teacher gives out assessment after inviting the students to assess typical dialogues from their classmates and a sample dialogue provided from the textbook.These instructional designs ensure the students to know the requirements of the tasks in detail,to learn the ways to complete them,and to perfect their own output after comparing with others.Results show that: 1)POA could lead high school students to better oral performance;2)The students' motivation for learning oral English had improved significantly after applying POA.The innovation of the present study are: 1)The teaching designs are advanced because they are based on the teaching procedures of POA;2)The teaching effect is analyzed quantitatively,which examine the effectiveness of teaching statistically.Meanwhile,there are still improvements of the teaching plans to make during implementing them,which are: 1)The students in all different levels should be taken into consideration when designing the instructional plans;2)The selective materials for students should be provided in more reasonable account,and the difficulty degree of them should fit in the cognitive levels of the students;3)Grammar teaching should take up more proportion of the teaching to improve the complexity of the students' output.There are only achievements a few made by the present study due to the researcher's own limitation.Amendment and refinement of it could still be made.Such as the detail explanation of the instructional designs should be presented more.And the maneuverability of them needs to be increased in future studies.
