The dream stories of supernatural tales in Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties serve as an important part of ancient Chinese dream culture.Derived from myths and pre-Qin literature, the story materials are also combined with ghost tales in the Han,Wei and Six Dynasties.Dream stories are based on superstitious ideas about dreaming;with a unique art form, they contain rich social and cultural connotations. The current of thought during this period was deeply influenced by religious thoughts, and people's views on life and death, morality, and space-time changed significantly. As a result, the literary form and cultural connotation of the dream stories was further much influenced. Therefore,it is only through deep and comprehensive research that we can draw a full picture of the development of the dream stories. This thesis consists of four chapters:The first chapter explores the origin and development of the dream stories through an analysis of ancient mythology and literary works of pre-Qin and Han dynasties.Myths about dreams gradually developed into the superstition in dream signs in the Yin Shang dynasty;the tradition of noting down dreams reflected in pre-Qin historical records spread the belief in dream signs;and applications of dream images in other literary genres also had a profound influence on dream stories. This chapter aims to explore the forms and reasons of dream stories' development in the aspects of social reality, religious consciousness and ancient scholars' views on life. The second is about the storytelling type.In terms of function, dream stories are divided into three types: premonition, mystery and missionary work. The predictive story has its own fixed plot mode, which plays a role in predicting good fortune and vigilance. The role of dreams in the story of mystery is that people and ghosts can communicate with each other. The content is mainly mutual help and common sense. The missionary fantasy story is mainly for the purpose of propagating the teachings of Dharma. In terms of content, there are also three types: karma, vision of life and realistic allegory.Such classifications are expected to explain dream stories comprehensively,so that readers can better understand and appreciate the way ancient people showed care for real life through fictional description of supernatural world. The third analyzes the cultural psychology.Investigation into dream and itstypical images makes clear that dream stories are rooted in supernatural elements.Let's take a few examples of typical dreams appearing in the mystery novels, and realize that the symbolic meaning can better interpret the meaning of the text.Changes in religious consciousness affected people's views of life. The shift from the traditional concept of virtues and vices to the belief in karma in Buddhism reflects people's psychological appeal. These influences and changes represent the psychological accumulation of the ancient Chinese dream culture.By analyzing cultural psychology through religious superstition,we can understand better the cultural connotation and value embodied of dream stories. The fourth elaborates the narrative features and influences. In the aspect of literary characteristics, the shift of narrative perspective gradually frees dream plots from the connection with augury and makes it the clue to move the story along.Besides, changes in narrative time and space enrich the means of literary creation and expression.Last but not least, the application and development of dream plots and forms can be found in later poetry, novels and operas. The influences from and penetration of dream stories in Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties are obvious.
