This is a report on the translation of A Course Called Scotland: Searching the Home of Golf for the Secret to Its Game(Chapter 1-5).This book is a golf and travel adventure.The writer narrates his story with humorous and powerful language.The source text ingeniously merges authenticity and literariness.Reproducing the semantic meaning of the source text dutifully and representing its language style are the key and difficult points in this translation project.During translation,the translator would encounter the difficulties such as professional knowledge,cross-cultural difficulties and reproducing the literariness of the source text.Guided by Newmark's translation strategies of semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator uses the translation techniques such as division,conversion,amplification and so on.Semantic translation pays more attention to original language and original culture,giving a taste of original language style for readers.Communicative translation emphasizes the expression effect of the target text,aiming to reduce the reading barrier for readers.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an overview to the project,including its background,significance and structure.The second chapter is an introduction the source text of the project,including introduction to the author,the main contents and the linguistic features.The third chapter is the approaches of semantic translation and communicative translation,difficulties,their translation strategies and the translator's preparation for the project.Chapter 4 talks about the comprehensive application of the strategies of semantic and communicative translation and the techniques such as division,conversion,amplification and so on.The last chapter is the lesson learned from this project and problems to be solved.
