On Translator's Voice In The English Version Of Bronze And Sunflower

Due to the asymmetrical communication in children's literature,adult usually act as a bridge linking the child reader with children literature world.And the implied translator as the narrator is more tangible in translated children's literature.The thesis adopts the concept of translator from Theo Hermans combining EmerO'Sullivan's communicative model of the translated narrative which is based onthe Chatman's narrative communication model.It takes Bronze and Sunflowerwritten by Cao Wenxuan and its English version from Helen Wang as case study inthe light of narratology to investigate translator's voice.The thesis investigates how the translator makes herself visible in the translated text,and what translation strategies the translator takes to present her voice.Judging from her prediction for the acceptability of target children readers,her value orientation and the differences of language and culture between Chinese and English,the translator takes advantage of different narrative methods to deal with her own voice in the process of translation.The main conclusions are drawn from the research: in English version of Bronze and Sunflower,the translator's voice can be discernible from the paratextual elements of the translated text;what's more,the translator makes decisions on shift of focalization and transference of speech to present or conceal her voice;Helen Wang makes analysis of original text at the aspect of lexical expression,syntactical level and thought presentation and makes appropriate adjustment to deliver her voice.The essence of narrative is to tell a story and the aim of children's literature is to tell stories for young readers.It would be feasible to dig into the thematic significance and artistic value of children's literature translation in the light of narratology.
