The demand for cultural exchanges with other countries in the new era has significantly increased.Spreading Chinese literary works overseas and enhancing China's cultural soft power have come to be an urgent need.As a special kind of literary works, children's literature has gradually begun to attract scholars' attention in recent years. At the same time, while the translation of Chinese children's literature has been developing for a hundred years since the Qing Dynasty, its research has only just begun. The overseas spread of the outstanding Chinese children's literature has not received enough attention.Cao Wenxuan,a professor of modern and contemporary Chinese literature at Peking University, won the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2016,which became an important symbol of Chinese children's literature going out.His two books,Bronze and Sunflower and The Straw House have won numerous awards since their publication in China. They have received rave reviews and are very popular among Chinese readers. However, after their English versions being introduced to overseas markets, they have achieved very different translation effects. The English version of Bronze and Sunflower sells well and its translator Helen Wang wins the Marsh Award for Children's Literature in Translation because of this book. However, the English version of the Straw House receives little attention.Based on the Medio-translatology theory, proposed by Professor Xie Tianzhen, this paper analyzes the spreading process of Bronze and Sunflower and The Straw House from five aspects: translation content, translation subjects, promotion channels, target readers and translation effects. The author tries to figure out how Chinese children's literature can achieve satisfying translation effects in English world.Based on the analysis results, the author makes the following recommendations: in translation content, the translation of children's literature needs to preserve its vivid expressions and childish delight of the original text and take care of children's reading habits;in terms of translation subjects,it is best to choose those famous sinologists since they are proficient in both English expression and Chinese culture;as far as the promotion channels are concerned,it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with foreign mainstream publishers and enrich the means of promotion. The translation activitiesshould focus on the target readers and meet their expectations. It is better to pay attention to the translation effects of children's literature and sum up experience in time.Through careful and systematic analysis and comparison of Bronze and Sunflower and The Straw House, this thesis comprehensively demonstrates the different translation modes of these two books for the purpose of providing some advice for the spread of Chinese children's literature.Only by paying attention to each aspect of the process of translation, can we find proper and effective ways for Chinese children's literature to“going out”.
