In the "823" artillery battle of 1958,both Fujian and the Kinmen region became the front line of the confrontation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party and the world cold war,and were deeply affected by the military and propaganda of the war. This study focuses on the relevant historical memory of the"823" artillery battle, focusing on the historical patterns and development processes of memory generation, shaping, presentation, and presents a more comprehensive comparison of different memories and narrative methods across the Taiwan Strait. The historical features of the,"823" battlefield also reflected the historical development of cross-strait relations.Firstly, memory arises from historical events.During the artillery war, both hostile societies launched military mobilization and control over the people. For example, the mainland militia system and the civil defense self-defense organization of Kinmen became the management mode for mobilizing the people to participate in military operations, which in turn affected the daily life of the people. At the same time, the two sides used the propaganda war to infiltrate the other people s military and civilians. These wartime behaviors have shaped the experience and perception of the battle to a certain extent.Secondly, the relevant historical memory derived from artillery warfare has been developed under the repeated recollection, retelling and construction of the cross-strait society, such as the narrative and propaganda of the typical heroes in the mainland, and the Kinmen s so-called Victory memorial campaign for this life-and-death battle. With the development of cross-strait relations, the former enemy dialogue has gradually turned to the demands of peace, and there are certain deep metaphors behind the different memory faces of both sides. The folk memory catered to the official propaganda discourse,or expressed the desire to criticize and resist official arrangements and became an important tool in contemporary political struggle in the Kinmen region.Thirdly, historical memory is solidified in society in the form of exhibitions or legacy protection. The use of war history museums, memorial sites, monuments and other cultural displays on both sides of the strait to carry out historical education to the public, continuing the specific factors in the historical process,is both a selective expression and a process of re-construction.All in all, historical narratives are often the result of social and political production. As Halbwaehs emphasized the social construction of memory, the interaction between memory and politics is mutually beneficial. In the post-war era,the historical memory of the "823" artillery war also revealed how the world should recall the history of war to better maintain peace.
