Pearl S.Buck is a unique and important writer in the history of American literature and even in the history of world literature.She was born in the United States but lived in China for nearly 40 years.Her Nobel Prize work---The House of Earth Trilogy describes the changes of Chinese society at the beginning of the 20 th century on an epic scale,and among which,she created numerous full-size characters,more importantly,the various ethical relationship is a major highlight of the work.This paper will adopt the ethical literary criticism method,combing Pearl S.Buck's own experience and the influence of Chinese and American culture on her,focus on analyzing various ethical relationship and the deep ethical connotation contained in the work.Based on the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures,through describing the changes of Chinese families in the work,Pearl Buck expresses her expectations of the ideal family mode under the integration of Chinese and Western cultures,finds her own way to solve ethical conflicts---to mutual respect and win-win cooperation.This paper is divided into five parts: the first chapter is the introduction part,which gives a brief review of Pearl Buck's literary career,introduces The House of Earth Trilogy.At the same time,discusses the debates and reactions between China and the United States on Pearl Buck and her works.Furthermore,the purpose,significance and innovation point of the thesis are put forward.The second chapter introduces the theoretical basis of this paper---ethical literary criticism.This paper summarizes the development of literary ethics and explains its basic concepts,discusses the differences between ethics and morality,ethics and literary ethics,ethical literary criticism and moral criticism.Besides,this chapter also analyzes the theoretical applicability and feasibility of using ethical literary criticism to study this work.The third chapter introduces the intricate ethical relationship in The House of Earth Trilogy from,three aspects: man and man,man and nature,man and self.The ethical relationship between man and others is mainly manifested in three aspects:(1)the marriage mode and ethical concept between husband and wife from the old to the new one.(2)the ethical relationship between father and son.(3)the ethical relationship of brotherhood under the temptation of rights and interests.The ethical relationship between man and nature is mainly discussed through the ethical significance of land to man,the ethical emotions of several generations of Huang family toward land,and the influence of land on the prosperity and decay of families.The relationship between man and self is expressed through the elaboration of Wang Yuan's ethical lost,his ethical awakening and exploration path.Chapter four analyzes the causes of the intricate ethical relationship in this work and the influence of heterogeneous cultureon Pearl Buck's ethics from the two aspects of Confucianism culture and Christianity culture.The fifth part is the conclusion part,which briefly summarizes the above thesis content and conclude the research results of this paper.Through The House of Earth Trilogy,Pearl Buck expresses her unique tolerant,secularized ethical views and humanitarian spirit.In addition,by analyzing this thesis,we clearly recognize that facing the heterogeneous culture,we should take its essence and discard its dross,and finally realize the harmonious co-prosperity of heterogeneous culture.
