A Study On Emily Brady's Integrated Aesthetics

In environmental aesthetics,the environmental aesthetic model is an important issue.In the relevant discussion on the environmental aesthetic model,the scholars' views can be distinguished into two factions:cognitive models and non-cognitive approaches.Emily Brady advocates the integration of the two factions and develops a unique "Integrated aesthetics".Integrated aesthetics criticizes cognition models.Brady believes that knowledge should not play a decisive role in aesthetic activities,but should play a complementary role as a background information,while local knowledge,cultural knowledge and other types of knowledge should not be excluded from appreciation.At the same time,the non-cognitive principle of integration of subject and object eliminates the boundary between man and nature,and it is easy to put human interests above nature,which is not conducive to respecting and protecting nature,and is not conducive to environmental decision-making.On the basis of criticism,Brady integrates objective positions and subjective factors,emphasizing that both sides play an important role in appreciation.On the one hand,integrated aesthetics recognizes the function of subjective factors(perception,imagination,emotion,etc.)in appreciation.After sensing the qualities of the object,the perceptual qualities characteristics are further analyzed by imagination and emotion.On the other hand,integrated aesthetics accepts the objective position of cognitive model,and places the perceptual qualities of natural objects at the core status of aesthetic activities.While the subject maintains disinterestedness,other subjective factors such as imagination and emotion will be working based on natural object,allowing one appreciate nature in the way itself.In this sense,integrated aesthetics incorporates subjectivity and objectivity into one system.Brady's integrated aesthetic model combines the two tendencies of Carlson and Berleant,while accepting the expansion of knowledge types by non-cognitive approach.Brady's integrated aesthetics ensure the ethical care and humanistic care of environmental aesthetic by preserving scientific knowledge,while also eliminating the elitist tendencies of scientific knowledge.Compared with other integrated aesthetic models,Brady's model is characterized by ensuring the objectivity of aesthetic judgment while maintaining the perceptual elements,namely perception,imagination and emotion,giving a platform to communication for environmental appreciation,and providing the possibility for aesthetic communication,aesthetic education and highlighting the natural aesthetic value in the formulation of environmental protection policies.
