The relationship between Zhou Zuoren and Tongcheng School is particularly important in the process of chinese prose transforming from ancient to modern.Their relationship can be examined from the following three aspects: controversial views on literature express emotions or teach doctrines,prose origin and how to transform.There are big differences in their opinions on whether literature express emotions or teach doctrines.Zhou Zuoren advocates that literature should be used to express feelings.This is also the main reason why he criticized the prose of Tongcheng School.But they not only expresses feelings but also teach doctrines in both their works.Because emotion and doctrine are inseparable parts of the prose.In terms of their prose origins,Tongcheng School established a profound ancient roots on the basis of the tradition of ancient prose.Zhou Zuoren is also influenced by traditional culture in terms of thought,language and expression.Therefore,the prose of the two has many similarities.They both pursue a simple,lingering and natural appearance in their proses.About prose how to transform from ancient to modern,The May Fourth Literature Revolutionand and Tongcheng School both contributed to the transforming.Adapting to the development of the times,Tongcheng School joined the economy and western studies in their proses and Introduced western education,laying the foundation for the modern education.In addition to this,Yan Fu and Lin Shu translating Western Works with Ancient Chinese and the new prose style which created by Liang Qichao also contributed to the transforming.One word in summary,there is a same prose tradition between Zhou Zuoren's proses and Tongcheng's ancient proses.There are many similarities between their proses and they both contributed to the transforming of prose from ancient to modern.
