Chinese ink portrait paintings have a profound artistic conception, and the effects they present are largely manifested in the way painters use the brush and ink. From the perspective of technology, this paper expounded the formation of the brush and ink language used by contemporary figure painters, which contains two major factors--reference and transformation.Chinese portrait paintings have always been inherited in an orderly manner with great emphasis on the source.Such a gene has not yet been changed until now. However, with the deepening of reform and opening up and the enhancement of China's international status,Chinese culture has been constantly integrated with the world culture,so the direction and forms of reference are more diversified and novel than before. If the reference of brush and ink is the premise, then the transformation of brush and ink would be the key.The magnificent history of art has told us that no classic work is in lack of originality. It is the common choice for most ink painters to transform the referred language into their own. This paper discussed the brush and ink language from the following aspects: the direction and forms of reference and the way and results of transformation.Based on a case study of some typical representatives including Liu Qinghe and Zhou Jingxin, this paper attempted to elaborate on the deep rules of the brush and ink language in a more three-dimensional and much fuller way.Having centered on my own creation and summarized my learning fruits of several years, this thesis will explore the thread of ink paintings from the perspective of their techniques, and encourage creating works supported by theories, and improving them through ink experiments. My graduation work The One Chasing after Light exactly embodies the combination of theories with experiments. The feedback on its exhibition will uncover more real problems that require to be settled in my future creation..The author used the research results of techniques to better guide his artistic practice and sort out his own artistic claims and skills.
