Research On The Exploitation And Presentation Of Folklore Elements In Historic Conservation Districts

The form of the traditional residential block is produced by the common production and living practice and social interaction of residents.Its spatial texture,architectural style and environmental atmosphere contain the practical wisdom of the residents.The block is the witness and carrier of urban history and culture,and the most basic unit of traditional culture inheritance.The traditional residential block is the place where the primitive ecological memory of urban traditional culture occurs.Folk culture with social consciousness which is created,shared and inherited in the daily production actives and living practices of the people attributes in such a cultural space.Therefore,apart from inheriting the context of urban history and culture in architecture,the block itself is also a space for the lively inheritance of folk culture.The Sijie Block in the northwest part of the old city of Nantong City,Jiangsu Province,is a typical traditional residential block,where the folk culture derived from the daily life of people in Nantong is produced,disseminated and inherited.According to the planning orientation of relevant departments,the function of the Sijie Block will be realized,and the transition from traditional residential blocks to complex historic conservation district with multi-functions of residence,culture,tourism and consumption will be completed.Because of the orientation of 'folklore exhibition and experience'mentioned in the plan,Sijie Block will become a historic conservation district which focuses on showing the historical context and regional folklore of Nantong.Therefore,the folklore elements in the block need to be excavated urgently and presented systematically.Taking Sijie Block as an example,this thesis studies the excavation and presentation of folklore elements in historical conservation districts by means of literature analysis and investigation.Firstly,this thesis analyses the current situation of protection and development of historic conservation districts in China,combs the excavation and presentation of folklore elements in these districts from the theoretical perspectives of 'traditional invention','folklorism'and 'space culture production',and summarizes the experience and reflection of the excavation and presentation of folklore elements in historic conservation districts in China through the investigation of different districts.Secondly,this thesis briefly analyses the development history of folklore in Nantong,focusing on the summary of Nantong's modern folklore so as to extract the folklore characteristics of Nantong,such as tolerance,upward mobility and kindness.It also summarizes the folklore elements of the three historic conservation districts Luhong Town,1895 Cultural Creative District and Nantong First City,which have been developed in Nantong.Thirdly,this thesis combs the historical and cultural background of the Sijie Block,searches and summarizes the typical building s and their cultural characteristics in the block,and extracts the folk culture originating from the daily life practice from the interviews with the residents,and excavates the folklore elements of the block from the material and non-material levels.Finally,from the perspective of folkloristics and combining with the actual situation and planning content of the Sijie Historic Conservation District,this thesis puts forward the principles,ideas,contents and ways of presenting the folklore elements in the district,and from the three levels of space maintenance,physical appearance and social life,this thesis puts forward some suggestions for protection and development based on the folklore elements.
