Jean-Marie Leclair of France and Francesco-Maria Veracini of Italy are both composers from the Baroque period.Leclair's Violin Sonata in D Major is similar to Veracini's Violin Sonata in e Minor in terms of compositional and performance style, such as strong rhythmic style and upbeat, usage of polyphony and emphasis on the fluctuation of melody, the change of speed and dynamics, etc. The two works also use many ornamentations, and their ornamentational methods are similar. On the basis of fully understanding the various performing techniques of ornamentations in Baroque period, this thesis will emphasize the performance of ornamentations in the two works, and make a concrete comparison and analysis. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The first chapter is about Leclair's Violin Sonata in D Major. This work is in ancient sonata form. There are many ornamentation techniques such as tremolo and acciaccatura in the performance. When playing tremolo,we should pay attention to the frequency of finger changes in the left hand. The finger changes should be clear, accurate and fast.Chapter two mainly studies Veracini's Violin Sonata in e minor. This work uses ancient sonata form, compound ternary form and simple ternary form. The ornaments in this work consists of tremolo, appoggiatura and also mordent. The mordent drives the flow of music better than appoggiatura as the range is wider. When playing continuous mordent, the left hand should play the notes clearly, while the right hand should add small accents to make the performance of mordent clearer. The third chapter is to compare the two works and find out the similarities and differences in the usage of ornamentations as well as the style of ornaments, etc. It also focuses on comparing the differences of Baroque and Classical period ornamentations. Both works use a large number of ornamentations, many of them are similar such as appoggiatura and tremolo, which constantly appear in these two sonatas. In contrast,Veracini's Violin Sonata in e minor uses embellishments to serve the music, while Leclair's Violin Sonata in D Major uses the ornaments to help with the development of performing techniques. In the music style of Baroque works, the usage of ornamentations is one of the important characteristics. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the related issues of violin ornamentational performance.Since the information on these two violin sonatas are relatively scarce in Chinese musicology field, this paper strives to make some innovative advances in the analysis and research on Jean Marie Leclair's "Violin Sonata in D Major” and Francesco Maria Veracini's Violin Sonata in E minor.
