On The Lexical Relations Of The Insertible Equivalents

In recent years,with the enhancement of Chinese comprehensive national strength,the improvement of Chinese national status and the boost of the Belt and the Road,Chinese culture is spreading around the world.Meanwhile,Confucian words are considered as the essence of Chinese traditional culture and their representations in bilingual dictionaries play an important role in spreading Chinese traditional culture.What's more,as a hot topic and a difficult point in bilingual dictionaries,equivalents have great value in lexicography.Besides,as an important factor in bilingual transition or use,lexical relation plays a significant role in vocabulary learning.Considering these factors,this thesis makes a systematic analysis about the lexical relations among insertible equivalents based on the Confucian words in Chinese-English dictionaries.15 Confucian words chosen from the Chinese Confucian Words Dictionary are as the research objectives with quantitative and stratified sampling methods.The corpus of this research is based on five mainstream C-E dictionaries and the paper makes an analysis about the lexical relations of the insertible equivalents of Confucian words.Compared and sampled,the lexical relations of the insertible equivalents of 15 Confucian words are analyzed in WordNet and a deeper analysis combined with Componential Analysis(CA)and Idealized Cognitive Model(ICM)is conducted.Moreover,in order to understand their relations deeply,these equivalents are searched in COCA in terms of frequency,register,collocation and prosody.According to the findings,the result shows that the lexical relations of the insertible equivalents are classified into four kinds,which are synonymy,hyponymy,thesaurus and across-semantic.Investigated by one sample T test,the four relations are of great difference in each C-E dictionary.Moreover,the study puts equivalents into COCA and the result indicates there exist conspicuous differences in thefrequency,register,collocation and prosody of these equivalents.Therefore,depending on CA and ICM,the thesis takes“?”and“??”as the objective samples and finds out the methods of improving the representation of Confucian words in C-E dictionaries,namely,enhancing the representation of prototypical characters,increasing lexical relations,adding labels among insertible equivalents and supplementing synonymous discrimination.Hence,the study is conducive to intensifying the relatedness of insertible equivalents,expanding the research theory of studying Confucian words in C-E dictionaries,enhancing the quality of C-E dictionaries compilation and boosting the spreading of traditional culture at home and abroad.
