The Challenge Toward Postmodernism From Universal History

Generally,Postmodernism refers to an intellectual movement rising in the 1970s and developing from then to present days.The movement has swept almost every humanism disciplines that includes History.Within History,it was meant to challenge the tradition of ideas and manners of modernism since the Enlightenment period in this scope.Under its influence,new situation emerged in both History and Historiography.Historical writing was liberated from past restriction.Substantial works in new styles and forms were created showing great diversity of new history era.While at the same time,Scholars began examining language and texts that history is rebuilt in.People also launched attack towards the authenticity of history represented by texts and languages.These two research techniques triggered the collapse of Nation-politics form,grand narrative and faith in progressivism,which in turn led History into trends of diversification and fragmentation.Meanwhile,It seems to be quite a coincidence that it was in such context that Francis Fukuyama,a Japanese American Scholar,published The End of History and the Last Man winning great reputation.As Fukuyama insists that he attempt an Universal history,this an old form was brought back to contemporary Historiography.Reviewing the past,universal history did appeal to humanity strangely and gleamingly dominated the course of history,Fukuyama also claims the obligation to reconstruct the faith of history and to guide the path to the future.Although with his eloquence,The End of History and the Last Man was crowned as scientific,rational and empirical,flaws that have haunted Universal history in past can still be found littered throughout his book.Postmodernism is the theoretical tool that helps us to crack Fukuyama's system of Universal history.On the other hand,the return of Universal history certainly has some significance especially in the days when postmodernism is playing an important role.Should we doubt that Fukuyama's work conveys messages of revelation or caution to History afterward?...
