On The Enplish Translation Of Local Chinese Food Introduction Under The Guidance Of Relevance Theory

With the development of globalization,cultural exchanges between countries have become more frequent,and the world begins to attach more importance to Chinese culture,which is rich in connotation and composed of various local cultures.Understanding local culture can help to understand Chinese culture more comprehensively.Food culture is an important component of the national culture,so it is also important in the cultural exchanges between China and other countries.There are many books introducing local Chinese food,and Special Henan Foods is one of them.This book introduces the development of Henan food culture and Henan’s historical changes.For the foreigners who are interested in Henan cuisine and Chinese history,it is of great value.This report chooses the preface and the first chapter of Special Henan Foods as the translation material and analyzes the translation strategies under the guidance of relevance theory.Because the chosen translation material is local food culture introduction,there are many Chinese classics,allusions and culture-loaded words in the text,and there is also a large number of coordinate structure sentences.These special words and sentences are difficult to translate.In this report,I analyze the application of relevance theory in the translation process and propose the translation strategy of "domestication supplemented by foreignization" under the guidance of relevance theory.When translating the proper nouns,connotative words,culture-loaded words,metaphors,parallelism,and coordinated structure sentences,strategies such as addition,deletion,condensed translation and conversion are adopted.Adopting these strategies can make the translation closer to readers’ cognition context,and help the readers understand the translation better.Through the analysis of some special words and sentences in the chosen text,this report summarizes the general translation strategies.It is hoped that this report will have reference value for the translation of Chinese local cultural texts.
