Transtextuality In Translation

Gerard Genette develops Julia Kristeva's concept of "intertextuality" and comes up with "transtextuality" to define all that sets the text in a relationship with other texts.He classifies it into intertextuality,paratextuality,metatextuality,hypertextuality and architextuality.Transtextuality has been studied together with translation by Salamina and Tapodi,the former of which takes transtextuality,unlike that in Genette's works and in this thesis,as well as intertextuality as two aspects of translation,and the latter discusses how problems caused by five types of transtextuality in translation are dealt with.Though they have applied transtextuality in translation,they have not analysed transtextuality in the text being translated,and studied how to solve transtextual problems in translation.On the basis of previous studies,this thesis analyses five types of transtextuality in detail in the first chapter of Harold Goddard's The Meaning of Shakespeare.In Chapter I,Goddard borrowed texts widely,building transtextual relations with other texts,either obvious or concealed.The purpose for analysing the ST with transtextuality is to identify problems that it causes to translation.Thereupon,the thesis explains how these transtextual problems are solved in the translation of Chapter I.After elaborating on translating transtextuality in the text,the thesis finds that transtextuality plays a constraint role in translation.In view of this limiting factor,translator should render form and content as close to the ST as possible when the ST is translated for the first time.In this way,its TT could be borrowed by translations of the ST's hypertexts to build transtextual relations with it.If not,there would be as many translations as the ST's hypertexts,either in the form of book or quotation.When the ST already has a canonized translation,transtextuality offers a perspective for retranslations-rendering the TT as close to the ST as possible.All in all,transtextuality is a limiting factor in translation that translators should bear in mind.
