The English Curriculum Standard claims that the process of language learning becomes the forming process of students' positive emotional attitude,active thinking,bold practice and independent learning ability(2011,Preface).Therefore,grouping-competition method is one of the contents of the current teaching reform of basic education.It divides students into different groups,gives full play to the advantages of group members and enables the students find their own interests and values in each group through the competitive way in reading in English.The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of grouping-competition method on English reading teaching in junior high school,including the degree of influence on students' interest in English reading,confidence,enthusiasm for reading learning and English reading achievement.In this study,students of two classes in the Grade Eight of the Junior High School of Lingyuan County,the city of Chaoyang,Liaoning Province,were selected as the research subjects.During the experiment,the author used the experimental method,the questionnaire method and the classroom observation method.In addition,this study also used the interview method.The study attempted to answer the following two research questions:Question 1: How does grouping-competition method affect students' interest,confidence and enthusiasm in English reading?Question 2: To what extent does the application of grouping-competition improve students' achievement in English reading?In the end,the data statistics and analysis were carried out.The final results showed that:(1)The application of grouping-competition method to English reading class in junior high school has improved students' interest,confidence and enthusiasm.(2)After applying group competition teaching method,the classroom teaching effect and English reading achievement of the experimental class were significantly better than those of the control class.(3)The result of interviews with all students in the experimental class is that grouping-competition method in English reading has a positive effect.
