Coming with the globalization,English as the most widely used language in the world is becoming more and more indispensable to people's life around the world.So English learning has profound practical significance nowadays.For language learners,reading as the major source of language input is the basis and premise to learn other language skills,which helps develop their linguistic competence.Therefore,cultivating students' reading ability has become the emphases of the English teaching.At the same time,“ New Curriculum Standards for Junior School English” attaches much importance to cultivating students' reading ability,which emphasizes the importance of English reading teaching.However,due to the limited educational resources,junior high school English reading teaching still uses the traditional class-based teaching system.According to the average level of students,a unified teaching organization is adopted,which ignores the differences of students and can not meet the needs of students at different levels.As a result,students with high English reading proficieny think that reading class is boring and the teaching content is not challenging for them.Students with low English reading proficieny feel that English reading is too difficult for them and have no interest and confidence in English reading.It will inevitably lead to inefficient reading teaching and students' reading ability will not be further improved.Based on the above situation,the author attempts to implement stratified teaching in junior high school English reading class.80 students from two parallel classes in the second grade of a junior high school in Shanxi Province are research objects.Divide students into three levels according to their differences.At the same time,stratify reading objectives,reading tasks,extracurricular reading materials and teaching evaluation.Questionnaires,interviews and tests are used as research tools.This paper mainly based on theory of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude,zone of proximal development theory and optimum theory on teaching process.It is proposed to answer the following questions.(1)What effect does the stratified reading teaching have on students' English reading interest and reading habits?(2)What effect does the stratified reading teaching have on students' English reading strategies?(3)What effect does the stratified reading teaching have on students' English reading proficiency?The results show that stratified reading teaching can stimulate students' reading interest,improve their reading habits,develop students' reading strategies.At the same time,stratified reading teaching has a positive effect on their reading performance.The reading performance of students at different levels is significantly enhance after tratified reading teaching.It indicates that the stratified teaching mode in junior high school English reading is effective and feasible.This study applies stratified teaching to junior high school English reading class and gives some pedagogical implications to reading teaching.However,due to the limitation of sample size and experiment time,there are still some limitations in this study.Some corresponding suggestions are provided for future study at the end of thesis.
