Serving the Chinese and Thai version of The Governance of China as the object of study, and with a research framework put forward by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, which is called the conceptual metaphor theory, this paper makes a classified comparative study on the conceptual metaphors appearing in both the Chinese and Thai version by combining qualitative methods with quantitative ones.Furthermore,as the guidance, when translating the conceptual metaphor, the mapping mechanism of metaphor is adopted in the Thai version to summarize and evaluate translation strategies and those elements that affect the choice of them, translation traits,as well as the role the Thai version of the book plays in local publicityThis paper consists of four chaptersChapter one,the introduction, including the research background, research problems, related theoretical research and development at home and abroad, purpose and significance of research, and the methods adopted by the researchChapter two is a comparison between the conceptual metaphors appearing in both Chinese and Thai version of The Governance of China, which is also a principal part of the comparative study.Based on the classification method of conceptual metaphor put forward by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the Metaphor Identification Program of Group Pragglejaz and the Resonance of Source Domain by Charteris-Black are used to conduct the statistical and comparative analysis on the conceptual metaphors in the Chinese and Thai version from the perspectives of structural metaphor, ontological metaphor and spatial metaphor respectivelyChapter three is another principal part of the paper, which is a study on the Thai translation of the conceptual metaphors in The Governance of China.According to Cognitive Translation Hypothesis by Nili Mandelblit, three translation strategies can be mainly found:(1)Under the similar mapping condition(SMC),conceptual metaphor is translated as metaphorical expression of the same subcategory.Literal translation literal translation plus omission are adopted in this case;(2)Under the similar mapping condition and different forms of lexical form, conceptual metaphor is translated as metaphorical expression of the same subcategory.Free translation plus omission can be used in such a situation;(3)Under the different mapping condition(DMC),conceptual metaphor is translated as metaphorical expression of different subcategory,or non-metaphorical expression.Free translation plus omission, and annotation are used now.On the basis of summarizing the translation strategies, four elements actually affect the choice:cognitive factor, language factor, cultural factor and social factor. The translation of the Thai version is of accuracy flexibility and vitality, and this very version plays a significant role when China's political discourse is disseminated to the outside world. All these serve as the sublimation of the comparative study in last chapter.Chapter four, the conclusion part,in which the research results are come up with, moreover, the shortage of this paper and the prospect in the future were presented.
