The rise in international cooperation among universities worldwide particularly between English speaking universities and Chinese universities has led to a need for web translations.English translations of Chinese universities web pages have become a necessity for prospective foreign students and potential faculty in order to provide into the life, study, work and research of the universities. The translation project is to translate the Chinese webpage news of SWUST into English news entrusted by the MTI office of SWUST.Borrowing the framework of functionalist approaches to translation proposed by German school, the translator first defines the overall translation strategy by analyzing the translation skopos of the project and translation brief explicitly expressed by the MTI office and implicitly embedded in the ST and TT profile. The next step is conducting an ST profile analysis which consists of the explanation of the original writer’s status, the text function, the non-linguistic elements included in the source text, target readership and medium of communication etc.,all of which facilitate defining the concrete translation methods and techniques.Based on the analysis of ST and TT profiles, finally, the translator decides to employ adaptation and compensation, combined with an in-depth study of the genre of English news writing. The ensued interview of a professional foreign journalist, also a foreign teacher of our MTI office, validates the translation method that the translator uses. The need for these translation methods is demonstrated in the results of questionnaires that were posed to native English speakers where they were asked to evaluate the literal translation of Chinese news and compare it with an adapted translation. The results of questionnaires prove the importance of the adaptation and compensation methods in online web news translation. The thesis is a reflexive piece of writing that documents an attempt to translate web news from Chinese to English for SWUST.The writer is convinced that it also has wider implications for web news translation of other universities in China.
