English reading plays a very important role in English learning.The reading ability of students is crucial in the process of English teaching.The main purpose of reading ability cultivation is to correct students' reading methods and improve their reading ability.However,due to the limitations of traditional reading teaching,English reading teaching is faced with severe challenges.In many English classes,teachers pay more attention to phrases and knowledge points,while the meanings of the articles are ignored.As a result,students could not fully understand the topic,but only understand words,phrases and sentences.New English Curriculum Standards clearly put forward that junior high school English teaching should pay attention to students' reading ability,which is an important means to absorb English materials,increase the language itself and expand the vocabulary content.Meanwhile,the improvement of reading ability provides a good foundation for students' oral English communication ability and English expression ability and help develop students' understanding of English learning and build up their confidence.Critical thinking is a purposeful,self-regulatory judgement which results in interpretation,analysis,evaluation,and reference,as well as explanation of the evidential,conceptual,methodological,criteriological,or contextual considerations upon which that judgement is based.The development of critical thinking can help students to think,judge independently and reflect themselves,promoting students overall development.Therefore,this experiment aims to prove that critical thinking English reading teaching can promote students' understanding and further improve their learning interest.This paper aims to draw the attention of all teachers,especially junior high school teachers,and verify the importance of critical thinking in daily teaching.Based on the aims,the following research questions are listed:(1)Can critical thinking teaching improve students' reading interest?(2)Can critical thinking teaching improve students' reading ability?This paper is divided into five parts: the first part mainly describes the research background and significance;the second part describes the literature review and theoretical basis;the third part is the design of the paper;the fourth part is the data analysis and discussion;the last part is a summary,which provides the main findings of this thesis,implications and suggestions for the follow-up researches.The experiment of this research lasted for three months from early September 2018 to the end of December 2018.The subjects of this study were 80 students in grade 8,class 3 and class 4 of Yangqiao Junior High School,who were divided into the experimental class and the control class.The experimental class adopted the method of critical thinking in the teaching of English reading.The control class adopted the traditional teaching method.The experiment used two tools,questionnaire survey and test paper,and SPSS software for analysis.The experiment has proved that the students in the experimental class had a deeper understanding of English reading and learned to use critical thinking to understand the reading materials and there has been a great improvement in students' reading ability and interest in learning.Many students like English reading more.Most students are satisfied with the way in which critical thinking teaching is combined with English reading teaching.According to the above research,it has been found that the application of critical thinking teaching has a great influence on junior high school English reading teaching.Therefore,in junior high school English reading teaching,teachers should encourage students to use brainstorm and expand their critical thinking.
