During the period of junior high school, depression becomes a frequent problem.Previous studies have shown that the problem of increased severity of depression is prevalent among adolescents at this stage.Teenagers' depression not only has a negative impact on their current mental health level and social adaptability, but also lasts until adulthood, which significantly increases the risk of major depression(Lewinsohn,Solomon,Seeley,& Zeiss,2000).Nowadays,because of the constant development of positive psychology, more and more people begin to searching new perspectives angle to interpret some classic psychological problems. In this study, personal growth initiative(PGI)was proposed as a new variable in the field of positive psychology. On the basis of previous studies, this study selected some junior high school students as the sample, revised the personal growth initiative scale, and used the family function scale, the revised personal growth initiative scale, interpersonal adaptation scale and depression scale to explore the relationships among those four variables. The results showed that:(1)The reliadility and validity of the revised Personal Growth Initiative Scale are good, and the overall level of the junior high school students' personal growth initiative is high.(2)The correlation analysis showed that family function, personal growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation were positively correlated, while depression was negatively correlated with family function, personal growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation.(3)Regression analysis showed that family function had a significant positive predictive effect on personal growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation, personal growth initiative had a significant positive predictive effect on interpersonal adaptation, and family function, personal growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation had a significant negative predictive effect on depression.(4)Individual growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation partially mediate family function(intimacy, adaptability)and depression,respectively.(5)Individual growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation play a chain mediating role in the process of family function(intimacy, adaptability)affecting depression. Therefore, family function can not only directly affect the level of depression, but also affect interpersonal adaptation through affecting personal growth initiative, and indirectly affect the level of depression. In the future,we can intervene from three aspects: family function, personal growth initiative and interpersonal adaptation to reduce the level of depression in junior high school students.
