Research On The Historical Writing Strategy Of Yan Gelins’s Novels

As one of the top level of new immigrant literature writers in North America,Yan Geling has always been a hot topic in overseas Chinese and contemporary literature studies.Because of her rich and unique personal and family experiences,the history writing has been throughout her creation.Through the multiple perspectives of women,intellectuals,and new immigrants,Yan Geling provides distinctive way to the historical writings of the late Qing Dynasty to the present.Therefore,this thesis takes Yan Geling’s historical writing strategy as the research object,and analyzes Yan Geling’s novel creation from the history of the text,the relationship between the writer’s view of women and history,and the exploration of historical writing forms.The introduction part of the thesis mainly introduces the origin of the thesis from the relationship between literature and history,and summarizes the current research on Yan Geling’s novels and the research methods adopted in this paper.The first chapter mainly deals with the history involved in the text.Through close reading of Yan Geling’s novels created in different stages,I reorganize the contents of her history writing in different periods.The early works focus on the process of spiritual transformation and resistance of the educated youth in the Cultural Revolution;after immigration,facing the dual dilemma of culture and identity,she focused on writing the new and old immigrants in a difficult situation in foreign countries and the love and pain of two generations in the process of taking root.;after 2004,the works began to look back to the motherland,showing the survival of nameless generation in the turbulent times with daily narrative.The second chapter studies the influence of Yan Geling’s female perspective on historical writing.Yan Geling reconstructs history with complex female consciousness,including women generting history,and history with women as the history latitude and other female views.Secondly,Yan Geling also tried to show the image of diversity women,deconstructing the understanding of women and motherhood in traditional literature,and expressing concern about the fate of women around the world.The third chapter mainly analyzes the flashback,person-transformation,meta-plot,non-adult perspective,and symbolic metaphor strategies used in the history writing.The application of these strategies makes her historical writing different from grand narrative framework present an unreliable historical impression.On the basis of summarizing the full text,the conclusion part discusses the uniqueness of Yan Geling’s historical writing,and supplements and draws on the writing of contemporary mainland writers from the aspects of the content,form and Chinese aesthetics.The main creative point of this paper is to analyze Yan Geling’s creation from the perspective of historical writing strategies.From the aspects of writing content,female history and narrative strategy,this paper explores the evolution of Yan Geling’s novels and analyzes the write’s attitude and treatment method towards history.Through multiple identities,we will further understand the value of the history writing of new immigrants represented by Yan Geling.
