Metaphor as a human thinking approach to pertain and apprehend one thing in terms of another has been acknowledged to be the basis of human's cognition,thought,language and behavior.It is common to comprehend and construct the meaning of love via well-formed experience.By means of metaphor,love can be associated with other concepts,which has a tendency of making it more concrete.Research taking love into consideration composes of the fundamental exploration to mechanism of human cognition.Some researchers predominantly shed light on comparing the love metaphors between Chinese and English,while the underlying cognitive motivations and psychological mechanism of translators need to be further investigated.Liao Songs is the narrative epic of the Zhuang,which traces its history as well as long lyric poetry with a persistent theme of love throughout the books.However,relevant studies on metaphor in Liao Songs are constrained within rhetoric realm and seldom touch upon the persistent theme of love metaphor and its English translation from the perspective of cognition.Under the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory,this thesis is designed to explore categories of love metaphor by the standard of source domains,which is identified by dint of Metaphor Identification Procedure(MIP for short),via an integrated methodology of quantitative,qualitative and description methods.It begins with mapping networks of each source domain and sub-domain with exemplification based on the experiential features of love metaphor.To proceed,various motivations in shaping love metaphorical concepts of the Zhuang are discussed with the aim of analyzing cognition basis behind it.At last,in the light of interdisciplinary study of translation,operative techniques and principals of poem translation into metaphor from foundation of language shift based on theory offered by cognitive linguistics are presentedBy means of bridging theoretical analysis and practical exemplification,the present study offers the following observations:(1)On the basis of results identified via MIP and divided by the standard of source domains,love metaphor in Liao Songs mainly stems from three types of source domains,namely human body,natural objects and virtual world.With that,each category further maps into subsystem in other words metaphorical imageries Specifically,source domain from human body contains three images—heart,face and eyes;the one from natural objects includes four images—plant,animal,water and moon;the one from virtual world composes of six images,covering disease,possession,things in pair,production and living,season and festival and journey.(2)The above mapping model indicates the bidirectional mapping feature of metaphor,which maps from single target domain to diverse source domain.(3)The motivation of physical experience basis,in the first place,integrating with Chinese philosophy and mythology and the Zhuang's cultural identity,including primitive religion,custom and moral codes and rice farming agriculture,yields joint effect on the shaping of cognitive mechanism of love metaphor among the Zhuang.(4)Translation is a cognitive process in which cognitive structure of SL is switched into TL Some approaches towards dealing with metaphor,for instance,borrowing image,explanation of image,replacement of image,decoloring image and compensation of concept,are practical in translating love metaphors in Liao Songs.(5)The choice of translation method is not arbitrary but deliberate via taking cultural adaptability,usage adaptability,textural adaptability,aesthetic adaptability,effect adaptability into consideration.Within the realm of cognitive linguistics,this thesis taking representative classics of ethnic minorities into account not only expands the research area of conceptual metaphor,but also is conductive to research in exploring cognitive analysis to metaphor in Liao Songs and even cognitive mechanism of the Zhuang.Last but not least,it makes attempt to boost discipline interaction between linguistics and translatology with the aim of making contributions to translation practice and foreign promoting of ethnical classics.However all the same,it should be admitted that further research is worth undertaking to make up the insufficiency of the present study.
