The introduction of English key competencies not only provides new opportunities and challenges for the reform and development of English education,but also impels many researchers to discuss and study English key competencies.In the study of English key competencies,many scholars would just focus on one aspect of it,and few of them integrate the four aspects of English key competencies as a unity.English key competencies consist of four aspects: linguistic competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.It is pointed out in the English Curriculum Standards in General Senior High School(2017)that the development of English key competencies can not only help students to improve their English language application ability,but also help them improve their ability of thinking,creating and learning.Based on Constructivism Learning Theory and Humanism Learning Theory,this study employs literature analysis,questionnaire and interview as the research instruments,takes 105 English teachers and 300 senior high school students in Yantai city as the participants.From the perspectives of students and teachers,this study investigates the present situation of the cultivation of English key competencies of senior high school students,explores the affecting factors,analyzes the existing problems,and then puts forward some effective ways to cultivate senior high school students' English key competencies.The results of this study are as follows: first of all,the development of English key competencies of senior high school students is not well-balanced,and most students perform the best in language ability and the worst in thinking quality;secondly,most students not only lack enthusiasm for English learning,but also lack good learning methods and strategies.In addition,most teachers have a positive attitude towards English key competencies.They think that English key competencies are conducive to the overall development of students,but few of them attach great importance to the cultivation of students' English key competencies in practical teaching.Finally,teachers' traditional teaching ideas,inflexible teaching methods and unitary teaching evaluation methods affect the cultivation of students' English key competencies.Therefore,in order to improve the cultivation of senior high school students' English key competencies,the author puts forward some suggestions for both teachers and students.For examples,teachers should strengthen their understanding of English key competencies,change their educational concepts and methods,and guide students to think positively.Students should correct their English learning attitude and develop good English learning habits and methods.
