Economic globalization has progressively become an irreversible trend in the international community.China and other countries are more connected due to China's rising international status.Against such a backdrop, the "Two Sessions" annually held by Chinese government has attracted widespread attention from all over the world. At the press conference of the Premier Li after "Two Sessions",interpreters have irreplaceable responsibilities and tasks.China has rich language and cultural heritage.Speakers at the press conference always quote and use vast unique Chinese expressions of cultural characteristics. They frequently omit cultural background shared with their intended audience, which constitutes cultural default for other audiences.Cultural default is one of the most energy-consuming and difficult problems to deal with in the process of interpreting.Interpreters must not only understand the source language within a limited period, but also interpret the source language into the target language and then convey the content. At the same time,it is also necessary for interpreters to reconstruct the cultural schema and deal with cultural factors, and turn them into schemata what the target audience can understand. This has led to mistranslation and omission.Numerous experts and scholars have studied the cultural default and have provided a variety of translation compensation strategies. However, many of them focus on translation while there are quite few related studies in the field of interpretation. In this regard, under the guidance of Schema Theory, the author takes the transcript versions of Premier Li's press conference interpretation of "Two Sessions" from 2013 to 2018 as corpus to research cultural default and its strategies of translation compensation according to content(cultural)schemata's relations between English and Chinese.Content(cultural)schemata's three kinds of relations between English and Chinese are equivalence, partial overlap and conflict. The thesis is structured in six chapters.Chapter one explains research background, purpose and significance, and expounds the feasibility of this research. In chapter two the author reviews the relevant studies on cultural default and its translation compensation strategies and correlative studies on Schema Theory in interpreting. On the basis of these studies, the author establishes the research direction and focus.Chapter three is the theoretical framework.Firstly, the author explains several important concepts involved in this thesis.Secondly, the author introduces Schema Theory, the three relationships between Chinese and English cultural schemata.Schema Theory explicates the generative mechanism of cultural default, which has certain guiding significance of the research of cultural default and its translation compensation strategies. In chapter four, the author firstly summarizes the characteristics of press conference interpretation. They are immediacy, political nature and content extensiveness, which make it more difficult for interpreters to compensate cultural default. Then the author analyses the phenomenon of cultural default in the Premier Li's press conference interpretation, and classifies some expressions that may lead to cultural default. In chapter five, the author focuses on the strategies used by the interpreter to compensate cultural default in Chinese-English interpretation of the Premier Li's press conference under the guidance of content(cultural)schemata's three kinds of relations between Chinese and English. These strategies, including literal translation, corresponding, paraphrase, contextual amplification, domestication and reconstitution are practical and useful. This will further expand the guiding role and application fields of the Schema Theory in interpreting. Finally, the author draws a conclusion of the major research findings and states some limitations in this research. It is expected that more experienced researchers will have further more mature and fruitful discussion on this issue.
