Vocabulary teaching has long been recognized as the foundation and the base of English teaching.And primary school education is the foundation of compulsory education.Therefore,primary school vocabulary education is of great importance,which is the beginning and the key stage of students' English learning period.According to the "English Curriculum Standard for compulsory Education" formulated by the Ministry of Education of the people's Republic of China in 2011,the students of compulsory education need to reach secondary goals at the end of the sixth grade.What's more,600 to 700 words,including 423 basic words,should be mastered by them in primary education.This is not easy for pupils.Therefore,what kind of vocabulary teaching method should be utilized by teachers is the key to vocabulary learning in primary education,which are closely related to the efficiency of the students in vocabulary learning.However,the traditional vocabulary teaching method is mainly teaching and inculcating,and students are less active learners.This directly leads to the lack of the students' interests and motivation in learning.As a result,the students are easily get bored about vocabulary learning,feel difficult to grasp the meaning of vocabulary and can't use them as flexible as they can.Therefore,it is urgent to improve the teaching method of English vocabulary in primary schools.It is difficult for primary school students to concentrate their attention,which requires teachers to have high ability of classroom management and creative design of teaching activities.Therefore,game-based learning is becoming more and more popular in English vocabulary learning in primary schools.In this study,game-based learning,as a teaching mode,refers to the teaching method in which teachers organize a variety of mini game to make students accept knowledge,improve their skills and cultivate their sentiment in a relaxed state.The purpose of this study is to explain the influence of game-based learning mode on pupils'English vocabulary scores and learning interestsIn this study,by referring to the relevant literature at home and abroad,and then connecting with the present situation of vocabulary teaching in primary schools,the author puts forward the following research questions:I.Does the game-based learning method improve the students'English vocabulary scores better than the traditional teaching method?2.Does the game-based learning method improve the students' interests better than the traditional teaching method?3.What are the opinions and suggestions of the students for the game-based learning method?In this study,two natural classes of grade 4 in a primary school in Shenzhen were randomly selected to carry out the quasi-experiment which adopts the experimental group and control group before and after the test design.There were 104 subjects,of which 60 were male and 44 were female,with an average age of 10.06 years.To complete the experiment,the two natural classes were randomly assigned to experimental class and control class.From March 2018 to June 2018,the experimental class adopted the game-based learning method,while the control class still adopted the traditional teaching method.After applying the game-based learning method to the experimental class,the author conducted a semi-structured interview on 36 students in the experimental class who represented three levels:high,middle and low.In this study,triangle contrast method was used to test the effect of game-based learning by quantitative and qualitative methods,including experimental method,scale measurement method and semi-structured interview method.During the experiment,the professional psychological scale was used to measure the variable of students' interests in learning.After the collection of data,paired sample t test and independent sample t test were used to detect significance with SPSS Statistics.Through a four-month teaching experiment,the author achieved the following findings:1.Game-based learning has significantly improved students' English vocabulary scores.What's more,middle level students made the greatest progress,while high level and low level students made less progress.2.Game-based teaching has significantly aroused students'interests in learning.3.The interviewed students put forward some pertinent and relevant suggestions for game-based learning to teacher,such as classroom order should be timely managed and controlled,the form of the game should be more diversified,and different management strategies and methods should be adopted for students of different levels.
