Doris Lessing is generally regarded as the most remarkable female writer since Virginia Woolf in English literature.Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007.Although The Fifth Child is not very famous among all Lessing's works,writing a sequel to the novel after 12 years is enough to prove Lessing's unique feelings and thoughts on it.Ben,In the World is generally regarded as the sequel of The Fifth Child.The domestic and international researches on Lessing and her novels have been very systematic.There are a wide variety of monographs on Doris Lessing in which post-colonialism,feminism,Marxism and Sufism are usually applied to interpret Lessing's works.Due to Lessing's female identity,scholars at home and abroad generally apply feminism to study her novels.But there are few scholars study Lessing's works from the perspective of Freud's psychoanalysis.This thesis is based on Freud's psychoanalytic theory to analyze the protagonist Ben.This thesis consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the author Doris Lessing and her literary creation.This part mainly discusses the research on the author and novels at home and broad,and also introduces the Freudian theory applied in this thesis.The second chapter interprets the development of Ben's personality according to Freud's theory of personality structure.The third chapter,starting from the theory of depression and anxiety,analyzes the influence of his childhood libido repression and the real living environment on his growth.Combining the encounters before and after Ben's departure,this chapter analyzes the conflicts between the instinct and the environment during the growth of Ben.The last chapter summarizes author's profound interpretation of humanity and gives a deep insight into the problems faced by a deformed child who is mercilessly destroyed by the society.
