At present,great importance is attached to the cultivation of students’ core literacy in China’s education.As a derivative of the original English novel,English abridged novel,with its idiomatic language and profound cultural deposits,has been adopted in the teaching of English reading in middle schools to promote students’ core literacy.Based on the teaching practice,this study will focus on the effects of using English abridged novels in the teaching of English reading in middle schools.With core literacy as the entry point and input hypothesis and humanism as the theoretical basis,this study starts with the current situation of senior high school English reading teaching,experiments with the use of English abridged novels,and discuss the following four research questions.(1)What’s the effects of using English abridged novels on reading interests of senior high school students?(2)What’s the effects of using English abridged novels on vocabulary expansion of senior high school students?(3)What’s the effects of using English abridged novels on reading ability of senior high school students?(4)What’s the effects of using English abridged novels on humanistic quality of senior high school students?In order to solve these four questions,a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods is adopted: 90 students from two parallel classes of a senior high school in Yueyang City were selected as experimental subjects,and the experimental class underwent a 3-month reading training of using English abridged novels,while the control class adopted conventional teaching approach.During the experiment,data were collected by questionnaire survey,questions before and after test,interview and other experimental methods,and SPSS23.0 statistical software was used for data analysis.The findings are as follows:(1)Use of English abridged novels can stimulate the reading interest of senior high school students,but it may have different effects on different levels of students: students with good English foundation are more stimulated,while students with poor English foundation are less stimulated.(2)Use of English abridged novels can expand students’ vocabulary.(3)Use of English abridged novels can significantly improve students’ reading ability.(4)Use of English abridged novels can improve students’ humanistic quality and cultivate correct values.The results demonstrate that English abridged novels have a positive impact on the cultivation of core literacy of senior high school students,and this provides an influential support for the wide use of English abridged novels in the teaching of English reading in senior high school.
